Overnight in Israel, new video footage has emerged showing massive protests erupting throughout the country over a proposed plan to revamp the judicial system. Tens of thousands of people flooded the streets and cities across Israel, as seen in the footage. CBS 2’s Jared Hill reports live from the newsroom with an update on the situation. The unrest comes after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu abruptly fired his defense minister for opposing his plan, which has sparked an intensifying protest movement that spread to nearly every sector of society. Reservists in the military have also come out publicly to voice their opposition. Netanyahu’s plan has drawn concern from the US and other close allies, but he argues it would restore a balance between the judicial and executive branches. However, the Consulate General in New York City has resigned in protest, calling the decision to fire the defense minister “dangerous.” We’re waiting for an official statement from Netanyahu in response to the unrest.
